Heat Stress Awareness

With the summer season approaching, we may experience days with extremely hot weather, which may harm the health and safety of our staff and students. To maintain a healthy and safe learning and working environment during these conditions, we would like to review the policy and procedures to prevent heat-related disorders.

Heat stress can occur when the body cannot cool itself, leading to serious heat-related disorders.  Heat stress refers to an increase in the body’s core temperature above normal temperatures.  This could be due to a variety of factors, including high temperatures, humidity, radiant heat (e.g. sun), and activity level. In the event of extreme hot weather, Board Policy 221 Extreme Weather provides strategies to implement when the Humidex is over 35°C or when heat waves occur during three consecutive days reaching temperatures of 32°C or higher. Some of the may include:

  • The Principal has the option to determine recess routine depending on local community conditions.
  • Refer to Environment Canada for information on weather conditions, as well as their guide on spring and summer weather hazards
  • Personal water bottles will be allowed at student desks and outside if necessary;
  • Staff and students must monitor their level of activity and take water breaks to remain adequately hydrated, especially during the lunch hour.

Last year our Catholic School Council purchased each classroom one fan. These continue to be in each classroom and will be used as needed.
